Metro Green Line Extension (SWLRT)

The Green Line Extension (Southwest Light Rail Transit) project is another step in Minnesota’s goal to provide more access to public transportation. The largest public project in Minnesota history, this 14.5-mile extension of the current Green Line connects Eden Prairie to downtown Minneapolis, with the addition of 16 stations along the way, via the light rail system.

Owner: Metropolitan Council

Location: Eden Prairie to Downtown Minneapolis

Contract Value: $799,500,000

For this large project, C. S. McCrossan partnered with Lunda Construction and this project marks the third time C. S. McCrossan has been involved in the construction of a Met Council light rail project in the metro area, and this one is also the longest. The SWLRT Green Line Extension includes the construction of 29 bridges, 8 tunnels, 131 retaining walls, 29 miles of track, relocating 7 miles of existing freight rail track, the relocation of nearly 1,400 utilities (public and private) and the demolition of 15 buildings, which includes moving over 4.25 million cubic yards of grading and granular material, 173,000 tons of bituminous paving, 684,000 square feet of concrete walk. Constructing a project of this magnitude involves intense planning, teamwork from all parties involved and the knowledge to perform the work at a level that brings longevity to such pivotal infrastructure in our communities.
